Terms of Service
Effective October 9, 2026. Northwoods Investment LLC, a New Hampshire limited liability company ("we", "us"), runs the Trout Hold Finder web app (the "App"). By using the App or buying a subscription you agree to these terms.
Trout Hold Finder reads the river, not the fish. It flags stretches where the shape of the channel and the flow of water typically hold trout. It can't tell whether trout are there today.
The short version. The App reads the shape of streams and ponds from public maps. It flags stretches that typically hold trout; it doesn't detect fish and can't promise you'll catch any. The App lists water on private land too, marked as such: a flag on the map is never permission to fish or cross land, and you go to private-land spots only with the landowner's written permission. You are responsible for where you go, and you agree to cover us for claims that come from your choices (section 9). Water temperature is modeled, not measured. You can cancel anytime, and you can get a full refund within 30 days of your first payment with one tap in the App.
1. What the App is
The App analyzes public elevation (lidar), stream, temperature-model, stocking, regulation, road and public-land data to estimate where trout typically hold in streams, rivers, brooks and ponds. It flags stretches of about 75 meters, explains why, gives a go / fish early / skip call from live stream gauges, weather alerts, drought data and a modeled water temperature, suggests tackle, and suggests a legal way to reach spots that have a public way in.
The App does not detect, count or track fish. Lidar doesn't see through water, so the App flags stretches, not individual boulders, pools or depths. Whether trout are in a stretch on a given day depends on things the App cannot see, including recent floods, stocking timing, fishing pressure, predators and food. Stream temperature is estimated from air temperature and long-term models, not measured, and can be off by several degrees. Data can be out of date or imprecise. We make no promise that you will find or catch trout at any spot.
2. Fishing law, property and safety
You are responsible for fishing legally and safely. You need a valid fishing license, and you must follow the current rules of the state you fish (the Vermont Fishing Guide & Regulations, the New Hampshire Freshwater Fishing Digest, the Maine Open Water and Ice Fishing Laws), including seasons, daily limits, minimum lengths, gear restrictions and closed waters. The App shows special rules from the state's published data, which can be out of date or incomplete; where it couldn't read a water's rules with certainty it says so and suggests no tackle. When the App and the official rules disagree, the official rules win.
Suggested parking, routes and road types come from public road, trail and public-land data. They are not checked on the ground. Roads may be gated, washed out, muddy, snowed in or impassable; Class 4 town roads and Forest roads may need a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle; some public land has its own seasons, closed areas or permits; and mapped boundaries can be wrong. Respect posted signs and private property.
Private land
The App lists every stretch it flags, on any land, because many people own trout water or already have permission to fish land they don't own. Flags with no public way in are marked "Private land · owner's written permission needed", or "Landlocked public land" where public land can only be reached across private land. They have no route. The App does not know who owns land, whether it is posted, or whether you have permission, and it never names owners. Land ownership and public-land boundaries come from public data and can be wrong or out of date.
A flag, a mapped stream, a road distance or the Guide me arrow is never permission to enter land. Whatever a state's law says about unposted land, our rule is stricter: go to a spot marked private or landlocked only with the landowner's written permission, carry it with you, and follow the owner's conditions. Respect postings, gates, crops, livestock and buildings. Landowners who would rather their water not be listed can email us and we will remove the flags on their land.
Moving water, high and rising water, cold water, ledges and ice can kill. Don't wade water you can't read, carry what you need to stay warm and get help, tell someone where you're going, and never trust ice you haven't checked yourself. When water is warm (about 68°F and up), trout are stressed and many die after release; the App advises against fishing for them then.
3. Subscriptions and billing
- Buying a subscription requires agreeing to these terms, including sections 2 and 9; we record the date and version you agreed to.
- The free preview shows the trout-water map and the top 3 flags for a location, with their reasons, today's call and tackle. A subscription unlocks every flag, parking and legal routes, Skip the crowds and Guide me in.
- Subscriptions renew automatically (yearly or monthly, as you chose) until you cancel. Cancel anytime from the Account panel in the App ("Manage billing or cancel"). Cancelling stops future charges; you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.
- If we change a price, we will tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before then. Founders pricing stays at the price you signed up at for as long as that subscription stays active.
- Prices are in U.S. dollars. Sales tax is added where the law requires it.
4. Refunds
If the App isn't for you, you can get a full refund within 30 days of your first payment on any plan, no questions asked, using "Refund my payment" in the App's Account panel. Nobody has to approve it. A refund ends access immediately. The self-serve refund is available once per customer; after that, or after 30 days, email us and we'll treat your request fairly. Refunds normally appear on your card within 5 to 10 business days.
5. Your account
We identify you by your email address. Keep your password and sign-in links to yourself. You may use your subscription on your own devices. One subscription is for one person.
6. Acceptable use
Don't copy, scrape, resell or redistribute the App's flags, maps or data; don't try to bypass the paywall; and don't interfere with the App's operation. We may suspend accounts that do.
7. Ownership and data
The App, its software, model, maps and rankings belong to Northwoods Investment LLC and are protected by copyright and other laws. Public source data remains subject to its own terms; Vermont agency data is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, and other state and federal data under their own terms (see the About tab for sources). Your catch log is yours: we keep it private and never share or publish it (see the Privacy policy).
8. No warranty
The App is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and that the App will be uninterrupted or error-free.
9. Your responsibility, release and indemnity
You alone decide whether, when, where and how to travel, enter land, wade, boat, fish or go onto ice, and you accept all risks of those activities and full responsibility for your decisions and their results, including any decision to enter or cross land, public or private, and whether you have permission to be there.
To the fullest extent the law allows, you release Northwoods Investment LLC and its members, managers, employees and contractors, and the people who designed and built the App (together, the "Trout Hold Finder parties"), from any claim arising from those activities and decisions.
To the fullest extent the law allows, you agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Trout Hold Finder parties from and against all claims, demands, suits, losses, damages, fines, penalties, costs and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) brought by anyone, including a landowner, another person or a government agency, that arise out of or relate to: (a) your entry onto, presence on, or use of any land or water, including trespass; (b) your fishing, travel, wading, boating or use of ice; (c) your breach of these terms, of any fishing or property law or regulation, or of a landowner's conditions; or (d) your use of the App. We may take part in the defense of any claim with our own counsel at our own cost. This section survives the end of your subscription or account.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited.
10. Limit of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for injury, drowning, vehicle damage, trespass, citations or losses arising from your fishing or travel decisions. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects paying subscribers, we'll give notice in the App or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the App after that means you accept the change.
12. Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Hampshire. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New Hampshire, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
